Belkin TuneBase FM with ClearScan - FM Transmitter

Chose this after reading reviews on both this and the Griffin Raodtrip. Some mixed reviews, the main issues being reception and the unit becoming loose with the added weight of the iPod twisting the unit

Very simple to set up and clear instructions. The unit has a number of adaptors for various iPods. I haven't tried the others, but the 80gb classic setup works fine

The plug fits very snugly into the lighter socket and there's an adaptor to make the unit even more secure if needed. I've only had the unit a short but there seems to be no chance of it moving

Setup was very simple. Hit the scan button, the unit stopped at 91.80, tuned the radio to the same and the reception is crystal clear (better than radio 5). My aerial is at the front of the windscreen on the drivers side which may help.

If there is a downside, the lighter socket in my car is low down and the digital readout is hard to see while driving, which may affect others.

Excellent build quality and sturdy. Fits solidly in the lighter socket and doesn't move at all with my iPod Touch. Gooseneck gives good flexibility in positioning. You might want to try it without the attached rubber washer initially as I've heard that it can cause the unit to get jammed in the socket. Works perfectly for me without that. Clearscan is a neat simple idea that works very well, and once you've found a couple of free frequencies you can store these as presets. Sound quality is very good. Not perfect - you get a little hiss and crackle during song breaks but I commute through south London and there is no such thing as a free frequency with all the pirate stations. You don't notice this at all during playback - certainly not over the engine and traffic noise and I've not had any break-up or interference during songs. My aerial is in the back window and this has caused no problems. The holder rotates easily too so that you can watch movies when stuck in traffic.

This item is perfect for someone whose car does not have an AUX connection unit to the radio. It works in any car (mine is a 2003 Ford Focus) as long as it has an in-car two power port /cigar lighter fit ring and works for my I-pod nano 4th generation. I would say that it is 90-95% clear as a CD (dependant on normal conditions). Also, having it perched up high makes it easy to navigate the I-pod when driving. I have gave this 4 stars because it sometimes rattles and you have to move/twist it about to stop it rattling and I would’ve gave it 5 stars if the quality of it was 100% and the rattling did not occur 5-10% of the time. But all prejudice aside, if you don’t want the cost of having to get someone to make a manual AUX connection to the back of your radio, this is perfect for you as it plays the music to a very satisfactory quality/standard.

Belkin have advised me that they recently repackaged to support newer devices (itouch?) and removed older cradles from the bundle. They are able to send out older cradles (well, certainly for 4G) upon request.

WARNING: Don't believe the website OR the packaging which claims that this contains cradles for "all docking iPods". The orignal manual suggests you get 7 cradles; only 5 are included. Instead, there is an addendum which states that:
iPod 3G, iPod 4G, iPod Photo and iPod nano 1G are NOT supported. There is also an over-sticker on the box to this affect.
