Quality Mass storage on the Cheap!
Reviewed by Paul. Review Posted 20/12/2010

A 2TB drive for under £75 has to be a bargain - plus the fact that it's a Western Digital with a 3 year warranty makes it a no-brainer. Then there is the fact that this is a green drive, so using less power - although it has to be said this at the expense of pure speed, but the majority of applications rarely need blistering speed, so this will do. To get the lower power consumtion, these drives only spin at 5400 RPM, but that also means they are very quiet and run cool! Just got 5 of these to put into a Synology diskstation, and setup was entirely problem free. Just remember when you get it to register it with Western Digital to guarantee your warranty.

Excellent Drives
Reviewed by Lloyd Tench. Review Posted 01/03/2011

Ordered 2 of these as part of a bundle with a DLink Pulse NAS drive for a RAID 1 setup.
Drives installed with no problems and running temps are between 39-40c.

Drives are quiet until put on full load but i do have 2 so its never going to be silent, very very happy with my order.

Requires a jumper
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 07/02/2011

Excellent drive but requires a jumper to work with XP, WHS, Server 2003 etc. No jumper supplied with the disk! Ease of use gets a 1 for this.

Huge capacity, fast read/write, quiet & cool.
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 05/10/2010

I've used it for a month and I can't fault this drive. It's a huge 2TB, its very quiet runs cool and on an external Sata caddy is blisteringly fast. I use an ASUS P5KE Mainboard & Win7 64bit.
I never give 5* for value unless its at least 25% less than the competition. On balance I'm delighted. Good one WD.

Good drive, poor packaging
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 13/07/2010

I bought two of these to use with a QNAP TS-219P, and these drives are excellent value for money. However I am only giving it a 4 overall due to the poor packaging (each drive came wrapped in a bubble bag which did not properly protect the corners of the drive.) One thing to be aware of with these drives is that they use 4KB sectors internally rather than the traditional 512B. This is a good thing but can cause performance degradation if it is partitioned using older tools which are not aware of this.

Poor Packaging leads to damage
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 29/01/2011

I purchased four units to make a network-attached storage unit. Drives were supplied in air-filled bags, but these were placed unrestrained into a larger cardboard box and must have bounced during shipping. Result: two drives out of four have errors and are unusable. The other two are in test...

These drives should be excellent (they run cool!) but possibly they are fragile? I advise running self-tests (SMART, use smartctl under LINUX) as soon as you receive them!!!

Cannot format
Reviewed by John Price. Review Posted 15/12/2010

Same problem as Peter. Formatting (under xp) fails with "unknown hard error". Running chkdsk at boot crashes at 94%. Looking at WD's own forum it is clear that a large number of buyers have this problem. Either these drives have a design fault, or WD have virtually no quality control. Dabs cannot collect the defective drive for eight days and with XMas intervening, replacement will take about three weeks. This is our busiest selling time of the year.

Formatting Problems
Reviewed by Peter. Review Posted 11/09/2010

I cannot get this disk to format under Windows Vista. Research indicats numerous other people with the same issue. Another review on this site for a Samsung 2Tb disk mentioned an incompatability with Nvidia drivers that caused disk formatting to fail at 54%. I have seen an identical problem with this disk. However I do have the latest Nvidia drivers.

Western Digitals own test software indicates that the disk is faulty. The Western Digital user forum indicates many similar problems with Cavioar Green disks... also with the test and diagnostic sofware.

I'm going to try another make!
